A long-awaited breakthrough may have arrived for many Gen Z users: a transparent nail polish that makes long nails compatible with touchscreen devices. The innovation could solve a small but frustrating everyday problem. The research, led by Manasi Desai and Joshua Lawrence from Centenary College of Louisiana, was presented at the spring meeting of the American Chemical Society.

Preliminary results show that a specific chemical formulation allows nails to interact with capacitive touchscreens by mimicking the electrical properties of human touch. These screens, used in most smartphones and tablets, rely on an electric field that is altered by conductive materials such as human skin. Nails, being non-conductive, do not trigger this change and therefore go undetected.

To overcome this limitation, researchers developed a nail polish capable of carrying a small electric charge. Unlike earlier attempts using carbon nanotubes or metal particles—which raised safety and aesthetic concerns—the new approach relies on safer organic compounds compatible with transparent formulas.

After testing 13 commercial nail polishes and more than 50 additives, the team identified a promising combination of ethanolamine and taurine derivatives. This mixture proved capable of registering touch inputs while maintaining good transparency.

The mechanism behind the effect is not based on traditional electrical conduction but on an acid–base reaction that enables charge transfer through proton movement. This process slightly alters the screen’s capacitance, making the contact detectable.

The polish can be applied over any manicure or directly on natural nails, and may also benefit people with calloused fingertips. However, the technology is still in its early stages. The current formulation does not provide consistent performance, and ethanolamine’s rapid evaporation limits its effectiveness to a few hours after application. Researchers are now working to improve stability and identify fully non-toxic alternatives.

A provisional patent has already been filed, and the goal is to develop a commercially viable product that combines technological functionality with ease of use. Meanwhile, the concept is likely to attract attention from influencers and nail artists eager to turn such innovations into the next viral trend.
