The secret to being more attractive is to avoid eating complex carbohydrates. This is according to a study from the University of Montpellier in France, published in the open-access journal PLOS ONE. Researchers have shown that the consumption of these foods affects facial features, making them less harmonious and visually appealing.

The Western diet largely consists of refined carbohydrates, foods processed to remove much of their nutritional value, such as white flour, table sugar, and ingredients found in many packaged products. Previous research has linked increased consumption of refined carbohydrates to negative health effects, such as obesity, type II diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases.

Preliminary evidence has suggested that consuming large amounts of complex carbohydrates may also affect non-medical characteristics, such as a person’s charm. To further explore this possibility, scientists conducted a study on 104 French adult males and females. Some participants were given a high-glycemic breakfast, with refined carbohydrates known to increase blood sugar levels, while others received a low-glycemic breakfast.

Participants also completed a questionnaire to assess their habits regarding the consumption of complex carbohydrates. Heterosexual volunteers were then asked to evaluate the facial attractiveness of participants of the opposite sex, captured in photos taken two hours after the provided breakfast. The research included only participants and volunteers with four European-origin grandparents to reduce cultural heterogeneity.

Statistical analysis showed that the faces of those who had received a high-glycemic breakfast were perceived as less attractive, both for men and women. Even adopting a diet that habitually included refined carbohydrates for breakfast and snacks led to lower ratings, although the intake of these high-energy foods at these times was associated by participants with greater physical benefits and thus more charm.
