Forget swiping right, unanswered messages and matches that fizzle out after a few awkward exchanges. In Finland, the latest place for singles to meet isn’t a dating app—it’s the local supermarket. More specifically, the frozen food aisle. And the signal that someone is open to meeting new people isn’t a lingering glance, but a shopping basket. A pink one.

The quirky custom came to wider attention thanks to an Instagram reel posted by content creator Kashivi, who has lived in Finland for nearly four years and says she only recently discovered the local tradition herself. In the video, she films herself shopping with a bright pink basket instead of the standard gray or black ones.

According to Kashivi, choosing the pink basket is a silent way of saying you’re single and open to meeting someone. No introductions, no profile bios—just a color-coded signal that you’re available. The reel quickly went viral, racking up more than 1.3 million views, over 62,000 likes and thousands of comments.

There is, however, one important rule: the signal only works if it’s mutual. Shoppers carrying a pink basket are expected to approach only others who are carrying one as well. If your grocery-store crush is holding a gray basket, the message is simple: don’t interrupt. No flirting between the apples and the eggs.

As expected, social media users had plenty to say. Some joked they would grab ten pink baskets at once to make their intentions impossible to miss. Others declared, only half-seriously, that they were ready to move to Finland if grocery shopping had become the country’s newest dating scene.

The idea was also highlighted by the Instagram page This Is Finland, which pointed to initiatives such as those organized by Tatskatytöt (“Tattooed Girls”), a community that hosts social events ranging from speed dating to “slow friending,” encouraging people to meet and build connections offline.

Beyond its viral appeal, the trend reflects a broader shift. As many members of Generation Z grow increasingly frustrated with endless swiping, ghosting and conversations that go nowhere, face-to-face encounters are making a quiet comeback. And if all it takes to spark a conversation is choosing a pink shopping basket, dating apps may have a new competitor waiting in the checkout line.
